Kevan’s New life

Kevan was surrendered to a country pound after his owners decided they “couldn’t afford his care anymore”.

We know better than anyone the significant costs that vet care can be incurred when animals become sick but, as it turns out, Kevan was not provided with any, not even the most basic of care, such as parasite treatment and good nutrition! At nine years old, his condition indicates years of systematic neglect which has resulted in a bit of a mess for this sweet dog.

We were asked to take Kevan on and we didn’t hesitate to say yes as we knew that without us, he was going to be euthanised. We couldn’t let that happen to such a sweetheart who just wants to be loved! He’s been such a clever boy keeping his foster mum active by being a ‘doorbell’ even if noone is at the door, but he luuuurves the car and thinks it’s the perfect time to settle in for a nap.

His current medical issues look like this:

  • Eyes: Kevan has been seen by the kind people at Animal Eye Care and diagnosed with pigmentary keratitis which is common in pugs like him. He currently has eye drops to treat this and will have a follow up visit with the specialist very soon!

  • Skin: This poor love’s skin is itchy and flaky which is a result of his overall health and inflammatory issues.

  • Ears: After years of untreated ear infections you aren’t able to see his ear canal… he is going to need ear canal ablation surgery in at least one, but likely both, of his ears.

  • Joints: As you can imagine the strain on Kevan’s joints is great from both being a pug but also the signficant amount of weight he has been allowed to gain without being exercised. His foster mum has started exercising him regularly to assist him in losing weight but he will also require joint tapping to determine the best way to treat his soreness.

  • Breathing: Another typical pug issue is Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) which is a breed-related disorder that means affected animals cannot breathe normally and this significantly compromises their welfare.

  • Teeth: After visiting his GP vet his teeth were flagged as needing a serious dental.

Kevan has had many procedures to far to help him on his way to a healthy life. He had an MRI of his entire body which showed both the significant elongation of his soft palate and the large amount of arthritis he has in his front feet. He has now had specialist surgery performed on his airways by Guy Yates at CARE and recovered remarkably well and back to his happy, energetic little self. Last week he visited his GP vet for a dental to get his teeth back in tip top shape. We will now continue to treat his ears before deciding if another procedure will be needed for them.

So far we have spent over $1000 on Kevan’s care and would love your support to cover the costs of his future procedures. You can donate to his fundraiser here. If you would prefer to donate directly to our bank account you can do so here.
